When the waves go flat, but the weather is awesome, I still want to go play in the water. A couple of years ago I tried SUPing and instantly loved it. Not enough to go buy one and store it at my house, but enough to go rent one or borrow one if I could find a loaner.
I learned that in order to really get the full experience out of SUPing, it’s good to go where there is a beautiful coast line and calm waters. Here are my top picks for places in Southern California for stand up paddling.
Laguna is a gorgeous artsy town nestled in the hills of Orange County. The coastline is rugged and serene. The ocean is usually pretty calm due to island blockage from Catalina, making it perfect for SUPing, kayaking, and snorkeling.
Here are a couple spots to investigate for rentals:
Bliss Paddle Yoga: $30.00–$40.00
La Vida Laguna: SUP Lesson and Tour $85 per person
2. La Jolla Cove
La Jolla is similar in nature to Laguna with it’s rugged coastline and clear water. La Jolla does get a lot for swell than Laguna, so you’re going to want to be sure to go to the cove. There are plenty of places to rent paddle boards, kayaks, and snorkel gear down on Avenida De La Playa.
Places to rent from:
La Jolla Kayak – La Jolla Kayak has all kinds of tours and activities from biking and kayaking to snorkeling and kayaking. Check out their site for more details.
3. Mission Bay – Mission Bay is a beautiful bay located down by Mission and Pacific Beach. There are loads of activities happening in the bay and stand up paddle boarding is one of them. The waters might be a little more busy than La Jolla or Laguna, and you won’t get the snorkeling, but it’s still a great place to hang out.
